Just a 35 minute drive from St Lucia is Hluhluwe / Umfolozi Game park

Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park is Africa's oldest proclaimed reserve and is undoubtedly one of Southern Africa's most beautiful Parks. Comprises 96 000 ha and boasts population figures of 350 elephant, 1 500 white rhino, 560 black rhino, 140 lions, 35 wild dog, 100 leopard and 4 000 buffalo.

Set in the heart of Zululand, the oldest game reserve in Africa where Zulu kings such as Dingiswayo and Shaka hunted and put in place the first conservation laws. Established in 1895, game viewing is the prime attraction. Viewing hides overlook waterholes enabling visitors to see animals at close range.
Home to the world's largest population of Rhino and sharing this with them
is 85 other species of mammals including The BIG FIVE.

Proudly ruled by King Shaka and other before him, this sacred hunting ground was violated, by the Big game hunters from across the big waters. The Big Game hunters from Europe hunted lion and elephant to extinction on this land of abundance, before the end of 1895.

Hluhluwe is characterised by hilly topography and the northern section of the
park is noted for its wide variety of both bird and animal life.
Apart from game viewing drives there are self guided auto trails
which provide information on both the management and natural history
of the game reserve. Guided walks can be especially rewarding in the
early morning and late afternoon.

St Lucia Estuary Lake St Lucia – Largest estuary system in the world. This extensive 85 km lake
is an average depth of 1 meter and home to more than a thousand hippos,
several thousand crocodiles, 526 bird species, and 114 species of fish.
It
contains a greater bio-diversity than Kruger National Park or
Botswana
's Okavango Delta. The five inter-linked ecosystems in the park are:
a marine system characterised by the warm Indian Ocean, containing the southernmost coral reefs in Africa, as well as sub-marine canyons and long
sandy beaches; a coastal dune system consisting of high linear dunes and
sub-tropical forests, grassy plains and wetlands; with swamp forests and
extensive reeds and papyrus marshes; an inland system which includes ancient shoreline terraces and dry savannah woodlands.
