The
Couta –King Mackerel
start mid December and by February the
run
is in full swing. They feed in different areas between Levin
Point and the Lighthouse 20km South of St. Lucia. It
can be quite frustrating to find them sometimes
especially when you hear of a boat catching 20 and
you have none.
It
is very important to communicate with everyone to see
whether
to
go to Cape
Vidal
or St.
Lucia.
The
Natal Snoek or Queen Mackerel start
in March and run through
until
late in the year –even in November. These fish can
be VERY illusive
at
times and yet often they are in feeding frenzies. One of my
favourite
sightings out
to see is when you look around and see them jumping
“everywhere” – the adrenaline
seems to take over!
When
they are in a feeding frenzy they will bite on anything but
other
times
they are pretty fussy. I have found a white plastic squid to
work
well while trawling as well as Halcos –my secret
weapon
the
black halco with the red head! Snoek also like the colour line
and
often
“bait ball” small fish usually bonies.
“Flicking” for them is your
best
option –the green Maria or anything green usually works
best.
On
the colour line “strip” bait also often works.
